Training to Become a Driving Instructor
To qualify as a driving instructor, you must pass three DVSA tests:
Part 1: Theory and Hazard Perception
- Complete 100 multiple-choice questions within 1.5 hours.
- Achieve at least 85 out of 100 overall, with a minimum of 20 out of 25 in each of the four categories.
- Complete a hazard perception test, scoring at least 57 out of 75.
Part 2: Driving Ability
- Undergo an advanced practical driving test lasting one hour, covering:
- Eyesight check
- Vehicle safety questions
- General driving ability
- Manoeuvres
- Independent driving
- To pass, make no more than six driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults.
Part 3: Instructional Ability
- Deliver a real 1-hour lesson, assessed on:
- Lesson planning
- Risk management
- Teaching and learning strategies
- Achieve a grade A or B to pass.

At Apex, we offer blended training courses that prepare you for all three parts, providing access to a Part Qualified Instructor (PDI) licence before your final Instructional Ability test.
