Learning in an automatic car can make the early stages of driving feel more straightforward. Without a clutch pedal or manual gear changes to manage, you can focus more of your attention on what is happening around you.

Your lessons will gradually build your confidence with:

  • Steering and car control
  • Moving off and stopping safely
  • Junctions and crossroads
  • Meeting and passing traffic
  • Roundabouts
  • Traffic lights and busy roads
  • Dual carriageways
  • Manoeuvres
  • Hazard awareness and planning
  • Independent driving
  • Preparing for your practical driving test

We don’t believe in rushing learners. Your instructor will build each lesson around what you need to work on, helping you become a safe and confident driver rather than simply teaching you how to pass a test.

Automatic driving lessons are a popular choice for learners who want a simpler driving experience without having to manage a clutch pedal and manual gear changes.

An automatic car changes gears for you, so there’s no clutch pedal and no need to manually select each gear as you drive.

For a new learner, having fewer controls to think about can make getting started feel more manageable.

Without having to coordinate the clutch and gears, you can concentrate more of your attention on observations, positioning, hazards, other road users and making safe decisions.

This can be particularly helpful while you’re still developing your confidence and awareness on the road.

There’s no need to learn clutch control in an automatic car, and you don’t have to worry about stalling when moving away or dealing with busy junctions.

For learners who find clutch control stressful or have struggled with it during previous manual lessons, switching to automatic can make driving feel much more comfortable.

Automatic cars can be particularly convenient when driving in busy Glasgow traffic because you’re not constantly pressing the clutch and changing gears as traffic slows down and moves off again.

This can make driving in congested areas feel less tiring and more straightforward.

Some nervous learners find automatic lessons less overwhelming because there are fewer physical tasks to coordinate at the same time.

You’ll still learn all of the important skills needed to drive safely and independently, but without having to combine them with manual gear changes and clutch control.

Removing manual gear changes doesn’t make learning to drive effortless — you’ll still need to master observations, junctions, roundabouts, manoeuvres, planning and independent driving.

However, being able to focus on those skills without also learning clutch and gear control can make automatic a very appealing option for some learners.

Our standard automatic driving lessons are 2 hours and cost £90.

We find that longer lessons give learners enough time to settle into the drive, travel to suitable practice areas and spend meaningful time working on new skills without the lesson feeling rushed.

As your confidence develops, your lessons will progress from quieter residential roads to more challenging driving situations, including busier junctions, roundabouts, higher-speed roads and independent driving.

We also offer additional training including motorway lessons and Pass Plus for drivers who would like to continue developing their skills and confidence.

It’s completely normal to feel nervous when you’re learning to drive.

Some learners choose automatic driving lessons because having fewer controls to manage can allow them to concentrate more fully on the road, their observations and decision-making.

At Apex, lessons are structured around your individual ability and confidence. If something takes a little longer to master, that’s fine. Your instructor will work through it with you and gradually introduce more challenging roads and situations as you become ready for them.

Whether it’s your first ever lesson or you’ve had a difficult experience learning elsewhere, the aim is to help you feel comfortable and in control behind the wheel.

Choosing between automatic and manual lessons depends on what suits you and what you expect to drive once you’ve passed your test.

Automatic lessons may suit you if you’d prefer to learn without using a clutch and changing gears manually.

One important thing to remember is that if you pass your driving test in an automatic car, your licence allows you to drive automatic vehicles. If you later want to drive a manual car, you would need to pass a practical driving test in a manual vehicle.

If you’d prefer the flexibility of being able to drive both manual and automatic cars, you can find out more about our Manual Driving Lessons in Glasgow.

Apex Driving Academy is based in Shawlands and provides automatic driving lessons across Glasgow and the surrounding area.

We teach learners throughout Glasgow’s Southside, including areas such as Shawlands, Pollokshields, Pollok, Giffnock, Govan and Cardonald, as well as other nearby areas depending on instructor availability.

Your lessons won’t stay in one small area. As you progress, your instructor will introduce different types of roads and traffic situations so that you gain experience dealing confidently with real everyday driving.

There isn’t one number that suits every learner.

How many lessons you need will depend on things such as your previous driving experience, confidence, how regularly you take lessons and whether you have the opportunity for private practice between lessons.

Your instructor will regularly discuss your progress with you and explain what still needs to be developed before you’re ready for your practical test.

The aim isn’t to rush you into booking a test before you’re ready. It’s to help you reach the standard where you can drive safely and independently.

At Apex Driving Academy, we want learners to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes while they’re learning.

Driving is a skill that develops with practice, and everyone learns differently. Our lessons are structured but flexible, allowing your instructor to spend more time on the areas you find difficult and move forward when you’re ready.

From your first lesson through to test preparation, you’ll work towards becoming a confident, independent driver who understands not only what to do on the road, but why.
