Ready to Master Manual Driving in Glasgow?
Looking for manual driving lessons in Glasgow? At Apex Driving Academy, we provide patient, structured manual driving lessons designed to help you build confidence, develop good driving habits and become comfortable handling a manual car.
Based in Shawlands and teaching learners across Glasgow, our lessons take you through everything from clutch control and changing gears to dealing confidently with junctions, roundabouts, busy roads and independent driving.
Whether you’re starting from scratch, returning to lessons after a break or moving to Apex from another instructor, your lessons will be tailored around your experience and progress.

Why Choose Manual Driving Lessons?
Learning to drive a manual car gives you the flexibility to drive both manual and automatic vehicles once you have passed your test in a manual car.
It also means learning some additional skills, particularly clutch control, gear selection and coordinating the controls smoothly. These can take a little practice at first, which is why we build them up gradually rather than expecting you to master everything immediately.
Your manual driving lessons will cover skills including:
- Cockpit drill and vehicle controls
- Moving off and stopping safely
- Clutch control
- Changing gears smoothly
- Hill starts
- Steering and positioning
- Junctions and crossroads
- Meeting and passing traffic
- Roundabouts
- Traffic lights and busy roads
- Dual carriageways
- Manoeuvres
- Hazard awareness and planning
- Independent driving
- Preparing for your practical driving test
The aim is not just to get you through your driving test. We want you to understand how to control the car confidently and make safe decisions independently once you’re driving on your own.
Benefits of Learning to Drive Manual
Choosing manual driving lessons can give you more flexibility both when you’re learning and after you’ve passed your test.
Drive Both Manual and Automatic Cars
If you pass your practical driving test in a manual car, your licence allows you to drive both manual and automatic vehicles.
This gives you more choice when buying, borrowing or hiring a car in the future.
More Choice When Buying Your First Car
Manual cars can often be cheaper to buy than equivalent automatic models, which can be particularly helpful if you’re looking for your first car and working within a budget.
There is also a wide choice of used manual cars available, giving new drivers more options when comparing different makes, models and prices.
Potentially Lower Insurance Costs
Insurance prices depend on many factors, including your age, driving experience, postcode and the car you choose.
However, some automatic cars can be more expensive to insure because their gearboxes may cost more to repair or replace. Having a full manual licence also gives you a wider range of vehicles to compare when looking for a car and insurance.
Manual Cars Can Be Cheaper to Maintain
Manual gearboxes are generally mechanically simpler than automatic transmissions, which can sometimes mean lower repair and maintenance costs if something goes wrong.
Every vehicle is different, so costs will always depend on the car, its age, condition and how it has been maintained.
Greater Control Over the Car
Learning manual also teaches you how to select the appropriate gear yourself and coordinate the clutch, accelerator and gears.
For many drivers, this gives a greater sense of control and understanding of how the car responds in different situations.
More Flexibility in the Future
Even if you eventually decide to own an automatic car, having a manual licence means you still have the option to drive a manual vehicle whenever you need to.
For learners who want to keep as many options open as possible after passing, this can be one of the biggest advantages of learning manual.

Learning Clutch Control and Gears
Clutch control is one of the biggest differences between learning in a manual and an automatic car, and it’s also something many new learners worry about before they start.
There’s no expectation that you’ll get it perfect straight away.
Your instructor will help you understand how the clutch, accelerator and gears work together and give you plenty of time to practise moving off, stopping and changing gears smoothly. As your control improves, you’ll gradually use these skills in more realistic driving situations such as hills, junctions, roundabouts and heavier traffic.
And if you stall occasionally while you’re learning, don’t worry — it’s all part of learning how to control a manual car.
2-Hour Manual Driving Lessons – £90
Our standard manual driving lessons are 2 hours and cost £90.
Longer lessons give you time to settle into the drive, reach suitable practice areas and work properly on the skills being covered without feeling that the lesson has ended just as you’re getting into it.
When you’re starting out, this might mean spending more time developing clutch control, steering and moving off safely.
As you progress, your instructor will introduce more challenging roads and situations, helping you combine your car control with observations, planning and decision-making.
We also offer additional training including motorway lessons and Pass Plus for drivers who want to continue developing their skills and confidence after passing.

Nervous About Learning Manual?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous about learning to drive, particularly if you’re worried about stalling, changing gears or getting the clutch wrong.
You don’t need to know how any of it works before your first lesson — that’s what your lessons are for.
At Apex, your instructor will introduce new skills gradually and give you time to practise them before moving on. If there is something you’re struggling with, lessons can be adapted so that you spend more time building confidence in that particular area.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or you’ve had previous lessons that knocked your confidence, the aim is to create an environment where you can learn without feeling rushed or judged.
Manual or Automatic Driving Lessons?
Choosing between manual and automatic driving lessons comes down to personal preference and what you would like to drive after you pass.
Passing your practical test in a manual car allows you to drive both manual and automatic cars, giving you more flexibility when choosing a vehicle in the future.
Manual may therefore suit you if you want that additional choice and don’t mind spending some lesson time learning clutch control and gear changes.
If you’d prefer to learn without using a clutch or changing gears manually, take a look at our Automatic Driving Lessons in Glasgow.

Manual Driving Lessons Across Glasgow
Apex Driving Academy is based in Shawlands and provides manual driving lessons across Glasgow and the surrounding area.
We teach learners throughout Glasgow’s Southside, including areas such as Shawlands, Pollokshields, Pollok, Giffnock, Govan and Cardonald, as well as other nearby areas depending on instructor availability.
As your driving develops, your lessons will take you beyond the quieter streets where you may begin learning. Your instructor will gradually introduce different roads, junctions and traffic conditions so that you gain experience using your manual car controls confidently while dealing with real everyday driving situations.
How Many Manual Driving Lessons Will I Need?
There isn’t a set number of lessons that every learner needs.
Your progress will depend on factors such as your previous experience, confidence, how regularly you take lessons and whether you have an opportunity to practise privately between lessons.
With manual driving, some skills such as clutch control and gear changes may take time to become natural. That’s completely normal, and everyone develops them at a different pace.
Your instructor will regularly discuss your progress with you, identify the areas that still need work and help you understand when you’re approaching test standard.
We don’t want to rush you towards a practical test before you’re ready. The goal is for you to be able to drive safely, confidently and independently.
Learning With Apex Driving Academy
At Apex Driving Academy, we know that every learner is different.
Some people feel comfortable behind the wheel very quickly, while others need more time to build confidence. Some find clutch control easy but struggle with roundabouts; others are confident in traffic but need more practice with manoeuvres.
Your lessons will be structured around you rather than following exactly the same pace for every pupil. You’ll build your skills gradually, understand why you’re doing things rather than simply memorising routines, and work towards becoming a safe and confident driver beyond your driving test.
